Week of: Feb. 3-7, 2014

Novel: The Boy in the Striped Pajamas

Reading
Mon. Class Discussion on reading assignment Ch. 10 . Vocabulary Development & Comprehension Questions on Ch. 10.

Tues. –  Language Activities – Investigate The Star of David – using the internet, students will find out who was required to wear  emblem during World War II.

Wed. – Synonyms – students will use the context of the sentence and choose the best synonym for the underlined word in each sentence.

Thurs. – Comprehension Questions – Chapter 11-12. Chapter 11 contains a literary device called a flashback.  Define the device and explain why it can be a very effective tool for a storyteller.


Writing
Mon. – Introduce Narrative Essay. Students will work on Flee Map to organize ideas.

Tues. –  Continue Flee Map and adding details to essay.

Wed. – Begin final copy.

Thurs. –  Observation Chart – The novel is filled with sights and sounds – especially those from nature.  Students will look back and get examples of the five senses- sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell.

Friday:
Students will finalize Narrative Essay to be turned in on Friday.

Read Ch. 13,14, & 15

Reading
Mon. –  Class Discussion on reading assignment Chps.6-8. Vocabulary Development & Comprehension Questions.
Tues. –  Relate to character feelings in the chapter – students will describe a similar experience in their own life. Students will write plural forms on nouns from the chapter.
Wed. – Ch. 7 – Voc. Activity & Comprehension Questions. Students will compare & contrast two characters Lieutenant Kotler and Pavel.  Students will rewrite sentences with correct capitalization and punctuation.
Thurs. – Review Personification used in the novel. Comprehension Questions for  Chapter 8.

Writing
Mon. – Grammar Revise & Edit – Kamico Practice Assessment 6 – present effective intros. and conclu., point of view, facts and details, spelling, commas, irregular verbs. Questions 1-6
Tues. –  Continue – Questions 7-12
Wed. – Grammar Revise & Edit – Kamico Practice Assessment 7 – sentence structure, present effective intros. and conclu., point of view, facts and details, transitions, edit drafts, semicolons. Ques. 1-6

Instruction:

Writing

 Mon. – Introduce Narrative Prompt for the week.  Begin brainstorming ideas.
 Tues. – Begin “Flee Map” and begin working rough draft.
 Wed. – Continue rough draft and begin to revise and edit with peers.
 Thurs. – Students will work on final copy of their essay.  Final Narrative Essay due.

Reading

Mon. – Discuss chapters 3-5.  Work on vocabulary development - Synonyms/Antonyms; Cloze Call Reading using a word box.
Tues. – Language Activity: Using the iPad, students will investigate and research three interesting facts about the notorious place known as “Auschwitz”.
Wed. – Students will choose ten words from the chapters with two or more syllables; indicate the syllables by drawing a line between each syllable.  
Thurs. – Comprehension questions for chapter 4 & 5. Character Study: describe what you feel about Bruno’s father. Language Activity: Interpret expressions used in the novel.

Enrichment/Projects:
A Letter Home:
It must have been very difficult for Bruno to move away from all his friends – especially to a place like Out-With.  Imagine you are Bruno and write a letter home to either Karl, Daniel, or Martin, describing your new home and your feelings about the move.

Mon. – Education Discovery Video-Part I – The Holocaust: In Memory of Millions. Discussion over Ch. 1 and comprehension questions.
Tues. –  Literary Device – Onomatopoeia. How does the author use onomatopoeia in the chapter? Give examples.
Wed. –  Education Discovery Video-Part II– The Holocaust: In Memory of Millions. Ch. 2 – Vocabulary Crossword Puzzle and comprehension questions.
Thurs. – Literary Device – Alliteration. Analyze how the author uses alliteration in ch. 1-2, and create examples of alliteration.

Enrichment/Projects:
Storyboard:  A storyboard is a series of pictures that tell about an important event in a story.
Students will create a storyboard by illustrating the events describes in the chapters 1 – 2.

Honors Reading

Novel: The Boy in the Striped Pajamas


Mon. – Introduce and build background using power point presentation for The Boy in the Striped Pajamas.

Tues. –  Meet the Author: John Boyne

Wed. –  Discuss Themes of the novel: Obedience, Loss of Innocence, Honesty, Danger of secret and lies, Friendship, Difference and Division (fences), and Patriotism.

Thurs. – Continue discussion on themes and vocabulary for Ch. 1-2
 
Honors Writing
 
Writing Mode: Expository Essay and Personal Narrative


Mon. – Begin Expository Essay. Review prompt and purpose for writing.

Tues. – Work on creating an effective controlling idea/thesis statement.

Wed. – Work on body paragraphs giving reasons and supporting with explanation and examples.

Thurs. – Create conclusion and revise and edit draft.  Students must check for correct capitalization, word usage, punctuation, and spelling.


Enrichment/Projects:
Students will complete their expository essay for the week.
